The next PhD seminar will be hold on 10.05.2012 at 6pm in Wannsee (Hahn-Meitner Campus, Kolloquiumsraum H 132).
This month Prof. Dr. Schock will give a talk about the history of thin film solar cell research, which is tightly entangled with his own personal career. Prof. Schock will go into retirement this summer, thus we will have the last chance to learn from his research experience and to ask him questions. The name of the talk will be “40 years of thin film solar cells”. As usual we will provide coffee and biscuits!
Afterwards we will meet at 8pm for the “Doktorandenstammtisch” at the Pörx, Fürbringer Strasse, 10961 Berlin.
First of all, there is a Wiki offering general information about PhD related issues and a lot of things more from “A to Z”. It is accessible via the HZB internal three letter code and the respective password and can be complemented, changed and updated by everybody.
Further, there is a PhD mailinglist (the so called doclist), which is used for spreading news and announcing activities for PhD students. For subscribing to the doclist write an e-mail to: listserv@listserv.dfn.de with the content (not the subject line): subscribe hzb-doclist.
The PhD seminar takes place every second thursday of the month alternately in Adlershof and Wannsee. PhD students or invited speakers give talks about their scientific work or methods, which are intended to be understandable for a general audience. After that, you are invited to join the PhD regular’s table at a restaurant or pub nearby.
For further questions of information or in case of problems occurring, there are various contact people, you can talk to on a confidential basis:

Once a year, a 2 or 3 day PhD meeting takes place providing the opportunity to get to know each other and network and offering various soft skill seminars.
Another PhD meeting (the so called PhD day) takes place at the end of the year. It is used to exchange news and talk about recent developments, clarify questions and discuss problems and current issues. Moreover, the PhD spokespersons for the following year are elected.
From 2011 on there are guidelines (see box "important documents") providing a structure for PhD education at the HZB. The form for the progress report which you have to hand in after 6, 18 and 30 month, are available here.
In August 2010 the HZB-Fortbildungskommission, decided, that German classes for employees can not be offered by Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin in general, due to regulations of the German audit court.
The established language in the scientific environment of the research centre is English. Therefore HZB is providing English classes for its employees. HZB will support applications for German classes in exceptional cases, when actual circumstances of the job or the centre so require. ( e.g. attending lectures for your PhD thesis which are held in German, or giving a tutorial at a University).
In these cases we kindly ask you to fill in an application form (Fortbildungsantrag) with a detailed statement of your supervisor, that knowledge of the German language is a necessity for your work.
The application form can be filled out here.
