access to licensed electronic ressources from non-HZB computers
slowly first, what is the problem?
Most e-journals (and likewise e-books as well as access to data bases like Web of Science) that you want to read have been paid for by your institute and the publisher of the journal makes sure that articles of only paid subscriptions can be read. So when you want to read an article which lies on some external server of the publisher, the server checks whether your request comes from an IP number which is listed "has paid".
If however you want to read an article with a computer that has a different IP number from the ones which are registered with the publisher, e.g.
- you brought your own notebook into HZB
- you are at home or elsewhere in the world
then you need to take special provisions in order to access licenced journals. This is what this is about. The solution given here is formulated for the case that you want access to a journal which is licenced for the Wannsee site - and that you have access to the Wannsee site including login-access to computers on the Wannsee site from outside, i.e,. though the firewall that protects computers against unauthorized outside access..
roughly, this is the solution
You persuade the publisher's server that you are authorized to read its articles by accessing it from a computer within the right IP range. You do this in two steps:
- You dial yourself into HZB using your login info for the firewall computer display.hmi.de
- From there you connect to a HZB computer proper, let it do the browsing on the publisher's site and let it show its output on your own computer. .
...and now here are the details
Here we guide you step-by-step through the procedure. We assume that you are on a windows computer and have access to the internet. You find a diffent version of the procedure on the pages of the FMD department.
