SRF 2009 Berlin

SRF - Wissenschaft und Technologie

This newly-formed institute aims to develop state-of-the-art superconducting radio-frequency systems and related technology to enable novel future particle accelerators.  The present focus of the technology development lies on systems for Energy Recovery Linacs (ERLs), which HZB considers an ideal driver for next-generation light sources.  The SRF systems being developed by G-I4 (electron photoinjector, booster module and main linac module) will be put through rigorous tests in the accelerator BERLinPro.  Parallel to these studies, a basic R&D program is geared towards gaining a better understanding of losses in both niobium and new superconductors in order to develop systems with very low CW losses.  These will obviously greatly benefit ERLs, but a further goal is to enable the construction of compact CW accelerators, such as Inverse-Compton X-ray sources that can be operated by institutions with little SRF-related infrastructure or experience.
