Complex Magnetic Materials

Instrumentation and development

In our department a wide range of microscopic and macroscopic techniques are used to study the magnetism of condensed matter. The operation and development of instruments at the neutron source BERII and at the synchrotron BESSY are within our main activity. The department contributes significantly to the user platform of the HZB with a broad suite of diffractometers and spectrometers using thermal and cold neutrons.

The high field magnet project is within our responsibility and the development of a polarized ³He filter to strengthen the use of polarized neutrons as well. An undulator beamline and a wiggler beamline are operated at the synchrotron source and these are integrated in the user platform. X-ray diffraction labs for diffraction studies, a materials lab for sample preparation and a laboratory for magnetic measurements form important parts of our research activities.
