Description: Emergent topological properties in interacting one-dimensional systems with spin-orbit coupling.

We present analysis of a single channel interacting quantum wire problem in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. The spin-orbit coupling breaks the spin-rotational symmetry from SU(2) to U(1) and breaks inversion symmetry. The low-energy theory is then a two band model with a difference of Fermi velocities δv. Using bosonization and a two-loop renormalization group procedure we show that electron-electron interactions can open a gap in the spin sector of the theory when the interaction strength U is smaller than δv in appropriate units. For repulsive interactions, the resulting strong coupling phase is of the spin-density-wave type. We show that this phase has peculiar emergent topological properties. The gapped spin sector behaves as a topological insulator, with zero-energy edge modes with fractional spin. On the other hand, the charge sector remains critical, meaning the entire system is metallic. However, this bulk electron liquid as a whole exhibits properties commonly associated with the one-dimensional edge states of two-dimensional spin-Hall insulators, in particular, the conduction of 2e2/h is robust against nonmagnetic impurities. http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.92.035139

Description: We explore theoretically the magnetoresistvity of three-dimensional Weyl and Dirac semimetals in transversal magnetic fields within two alternative models of disorder: (i) short-range impurities and (ii) charged (Coulomb) impurities. Impurity scattering is treated using the self-consistent Born approximation. We find that an unusual broadening of Landau levels leads to a variety of regimes of the resistivity scaling in the temperature-magnetic field plane. In particular, the magnetoresitance is non-monotonous for the white-noise disorder model. For H→0 the magnetoresistance for short-range impurities vanishes in a non-analytic way as H1/3. In the limits of strongest magnetic fields H, the magnetoresistivity vanishes as 1/H for pointlike impurities, while it is linear and positive in the model with Coulomb impurities.

Description: The surface state of 3D topological insulators is a single Dirac cone. Presence of a magnet (breaking time-reversal symmetry) or a superconductor (breaking particle conservation) in the vicinity of such a surface state forces the Dirac cone to open an energy gap. Recently, it was conjectured that strong interactions drive the Dirac cone into a state with topological order, i.e. providing a third option to gap out the Dirac cone but without breaking any symmetry. Here we investigate rigorously the phase diagram for contact interactions within exact diagonalization. We find a rich phase diagram, but no sign of a topologically ordered phase. We further demonstrate that “heterostructures” give rise to chiral fermion or Majorana modes.

Description: The unconventional (half-integer) quantum Hall effect for a single species of Dirac fermions is analyzed. We discuss possible experimental measurements of the half-integer Hall conductance gxy of topological insulator surface states and explain how to reconcile Laughlin's flux insertion argument with half-integer gxy. Using a vortex state representation of Landau Level wavefunctions, we calculate current density beyond linear response, which is in particular relevant to the topological image monopole effect. As a major result, the field theory describing the localization physics of the quantum Hall effect of a single species of Dirac fermions is derived. In this connection, the issue of (absent) parity anomaly is revisited. The renormalization group flow (RG) and the resulting phase diagram are extensively discussed. Starting values of the RG flow are given by the semiclassical conductivity tensor which is obtained from the Boltzmann transport theory of the anomalous Hall effect.

A quantum spin Hall insulator is a two-dimensional state of matter consisting of an insulating bulk and one-dimensional helical edge states. While these edge states are topologically protected against elastic backscattering in the presence of disorder, interaction-induced inelastic terms may yield a finite conductivity. By using a kinetic equation approach, we find the backscattering rate τ−1 and the semiclassical conductivity in the regimes of high (ω≫τ−1) and low (ω≪τ−1) frequency. By comparing the two limits, we find that the parametric dependence of conductivity is described by the Drude formula for the case of a disordered edge. On the other hand, in the clean case where the resistance originates from umklapp interactions, the conductivity takes a non-Drude form with a parametric suppression of scattering in the dc limit as compared to the ac case. This behavior is due to the peculiarity of umklapp scattering processes involving necessarily the state at the "Dirac point". In order to take into account Luttinger liquid effects, we complement the kinetic equation analysis by treating interactions exactly in bosonization and calculating conductivity using the Kubo formula. In this way, we obtain the frequency and temperature dependence of conductivity over a wide range of parameters. We find the temperature and frequency dependence of the transport scattering time in a disordered system as τ∼[max(ω,T)]−2K−2, for K>2/3 and τ∼[max(ω,T)]−8K+2 for K<2/3.

Description: Photoemission of Bi2Se3 with Circularly Polarized Light: Probe of Spin Polarization or Means for Spin Manipulation?

The electric conductivity at the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator relies on spin-polarized electrons in a peculiar manner: Electrons in a left-moving current have their spins directed opposite to those in a right-moving one. For this condition to be fulfilled in all directions on a surface, the spins are confined to the surface plane. But how do we determine the orientation of the spins? The photoelectric effect, where electrons are excited to a higher-energy state (referred to as a “final state”) and then liberated from a solid surface by ultraviolet or x-ray light, has been used for this purpose. What is not clear is if, and how much, the light used in the measurement itself reorients the electron spins.

A recent theoretical work followed by a laser experiment using 6-eV photons reported that the use of circularly polarized light will always realign the electron spin with the direction of the incident light and control its orientation (parallel or antiparallel) through the direction of light polarization. In this combined experimental and theoretical work, we report new findings, revealing that whether or not the spins of the photoexcited electrons are reoriented actually depends on the full symmetry properties of their final states.

We have studied the response of the spins of the photoelectrons from the prototypical topological insulator bismuth selenide in a wide range of photon energies. We have found that for typical photon energies employed in photoemission experiments (about 50 eV), the spins remain oriented within the surface plane. For very low photon energies, however, the photoemission process fully rotates the spin out of this plane, and its orientation is indeed controlled by the direction of circular polarization of the light.

Beyond the fundamental physics, there is also a practical question: Can light be used to manipulate the spin orientations of the surface currents of topological insulators toward the goal of light-controlled spintronic devices? The insights we have gained may prove crucial in answering this question.

Description: A theory of combined interference and interaction effects on the diffusive transport properties of 3D topological insulator surface states is developed. We focus on a slab geometry (characteristic for most experiments) and show that interactions between the top and bottom surfaces are important at not too high temperatures. We treat the general case of different surfaces (different carrier densities, uncorrelated disorder, arbitrary dielectric environment, etc.). In order to access the low-energy behavior of the system we renormalize the interacting diffusive sigma model in the one loop approximation. It is shown that intersurface interaction is relevant in the renormalization group (RG) sense and the case of decoupled surfaces is therefore unstable. An analysis of the emerging RG flow yields a rather rich behavior. We discuss realistic experimental scenarios and predict a characteristic non-monotonic temperature dependence of the conductivity. In the infrared (low-temperature) limit, the systems flows into a metallic fixed point. At this point, even initially different surfaces have the same transport properties. Investigating topological effects, we present a local expression of the ℤ2 theta term in the sigma model by first deriving the Wess-Zumino-Witten theory for class DIII by means of non-abelian bosonization and then breaking the symmetry down to AII. This allows us to study a response of the system to an external electromagnetic field. Further, we discuss the difference between the system of Dirac fermions on the top and bottom surfaces of a topological insulator slab and its non-topological counterpart in a double-well structure with strong spin-orbit interaction. http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.88.035106

Description: We study transport properties of the helical edge states of two-dimensional integer and fractional topological insulators via double constrictions. Such constrictions couple the upper and lower edges of the sample, and can be made and tuned by adding side gates to the system. Using renormalization group and duality mapping, we analyze phase diagrams and transport properties in each of these cases. Most interesting is the case of two constrictions tuned to resonance, where we obtain Kondo behavior, with a tunable Kondo temperature. Moving away from resonance gives the possibility of a metal-insulator transition at some finite detuning.
