BESSY VSR: The upgrade from BESSY II

BESSY II provides light pulses in the soft X-ray range of about 20 picoseconds (10-12 s). This allows to be examined materials. However, many research groups are looking for shorter light pulses to be able to observe rapid processes in materials. Therefore, teams at the HZB are now working to make BESSY II to a variable pulse length storage ring BESSY VSR. BESSY VSR generates both: brilliant long pulses (20 ps) and high energy short pulses (2 ps). At each beamline, the teams can then choose which pulse length they need.
