BER II
Call for proposals 2012/II
Due to the delayed restart of the reactor and a significant backlog of previous application rounds, the proposal round 2012/II for BER II has been omitted.
Beam time allocation 2012/I
The proposals of round 2012/I have been reviewed and ranked according to their scientific merit by the Scientific Selection Panel. Based on these rankings, beam time will be allocated to the best ranked proposal as soon as a schedule of BER II reactor operation for 2012 is available. All proposers will be contacted as soon as possible about final allocation of beam time to their proposals.
Proposals for 2011/II
All proposals from round 2011/II has been shifted to round 2012/I.
Neutron scattering provides important and unique information about structural, dynamic and magnetic properties of condensed matter, which in many cases cannot be gained by other methods.
BENSC offers access to a great variety of new or upgraded neutron instruments, suited for carrying out research in many fields of science, e.g. solid state physics, polymers, crystallography and structural chemistry, biology, fundamental and applied material science. There is special emphasis on sample environment under extreme conditions (e.g. high fields, high pressure, high, low and ultra low temperatures - and combinations of these special conditions).
The user service at BENSC is well established as of 1993.
About 70% of the beam time at the neutron instruments is made available to external users, with 50% of the beam time being allocated for short-term research proposals. About 20% of the beam time is foreseen for long-term cooperations, which include access for doctoral researchers who need long term access for completion of their thesis, as well as access for groups who operate their own instrument or assist BENSC with respect to instrument development and service to other users. Up to 10% of time on each instrument is available for allocation at discretion of the BENSC Director for particularly timely experiments and to promote new techniques or feasibility experiments.
The HZB Scientific Colleges, an international selection panel, assesses the scientific merits of short term proposals and decides on priorities and beam time allocation.
Deadlines for neutron and synchrotron proposal submission:
1 March and 1 September annually.
The services of BENSC are normally free of charge for members of universities and other public institutions. The readiness to publish the scientific results in internationally accepted journals - giving proper credit to BENSC staff members and proper mentioning to the HB facilities - is prerequisite for the charge-free admission of external users.
The results of all measurements must be reported to the HZB cientific Colleges. These Experimental Reports are interim summaries of the experiments carried out at BENSC. BENSC reserves the right to include these reports and results in its annual scientific report.
Limited BENSC funds are available to assist with travel and subsistence expenses of external users, whereby users from German Universities get preferential treatment. In addition, users from EU member states and associated states may qualify for a travel grant provided by the European Commission.
