Before beginning work at BESSY II, all users must register with the BESSY II User Office and have a valid instruction. An ID Card will give access to BESSY II Buildings and the Experimental Hall. Provided the beamtime has been prepared according to the BESSY II requirements, the entire registration process can be completed in less than 30 minutes.
For additional information about registration procedures, please contact the BESSY II User Office.
The BESSY II safety training pages are intended to provide you with information about safety at BESSY II. This information is of particular help in preparation of experiments and even more during the experiment at BESSY II. You will find information about e.g. general safety and radiation protection.
If you are for the 1st time at BESSY II, or if your last safety instruction was more than 12 months ago, you have to follow an interactive instruction. The instruction consists of a compulsory part (general regulations and radiation protection) and further instructions needed for particular areas of work like the use of liquid helium and lasers, as well as activities in the mechanical workshop and in the chemical laboratory. The compulsory part takes approximately 30 minutes. The whole course will not take longer than 40 minutes.
Please make absolutely sure that you complete all modules necessary for your work at BESSY II.
The instruction runs on dedicated computers located in the BESSY II library. In case you do not yet have an activated ID card, you can get a card giving you access to the library from the BESSY II User Office or the guards desk at the entrance. Please be aware of the fact that in this case, at least the compulsory part of the course has to be passed before being able to enter the experimental hall.
For additional information about the safety training procedure, please contact the BESSY II User Office.
When you arrive at your experiment please complete a Yellow Board (BESSY II on-site access only) indicating user names, dangerous equipment, hazardous substances and an emergency phone number. You will find a description on how to complete the Yellow Board at every beamline.
Most recent information for users is displayed on the on-site information system. In case of any problems, please call the User Assistant ('Hallendienst'). The phone number is given on the system and usually is -12984.
