CALL FOR PROPOSALS 2nd SEMESTER 2012

The call  for the next proposal round for our large scale facility BESSY II  with beam time being allocated in the second half of 2012 (August 2012 to January 2013) is OPENED.

THE DEADLINE FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSION IS MARCH 1, 2012, 23:59 (CET)

The Scientific Selection Panel will meet at the beginning of May. Allocation information is to be expected by the mid of June.

The BESSY II Operation Calendar 2012_2 can be found here.

In the 2nd semester 2012 BESSY II will run in TOP-UP-mode. Please mind the new, more stringent radiation safety requirements!

HZB users are asked to exclusively submit their proposals via GATE, by either choosing the <Neutrons (BER II)> or the <Photons (BESSY II)> -link. Please note the "Guidelines for Proposal Submission" which are available in the online help (more info>>). Users not yet registered in our data-base will have to do so before being able to apply for beamtime or to be included as a co-proposer.

Most relevant and partially new information:

Available times:
The application period 2nd semester 2012 covers the months August  2012 to January 2013. BESSY II will provide 15 weeks of multi-bunch, 2 weeks of single bunch and 1 week of low-alpha operation. For a reasonable specification of preferred and/or inconvenient beamtime periods in the technical section of your application, please have a look to the BESSY II operation calendar 2012 or simply follow the link to the operation calendar 2012 in the header of the online platform.

Top-up and Radiation Safety Requirements
Starting with August 2012, BESSY II will be operated in TOP-UP mode. Radiation safety regulations force us to install a CONTROLLED AREA in the BESSY II experimental hall. Users will have to fullfil more stringent radiation safety requirements. For details read the Radiation Safety requirements pages!

EU-Transnational Access Program:

The Transnational Access Program within the European Commission's Integrated Infrastructure Initiative (I3) project "European Light Sources Activities - Synchrotrons and Free Electron Lasers (ELISA)" ended with the application period 1st semester 2011. The follow-up program CECILIA was not approved. Applications for alternatives are still under negotiation. For Macromolecular Crystallography and biological X-Ray microscopy a new alternative program "BioStructX" was funded, details for this TNA program are still under development.  So for the time being, the EU-TNA program is without financing.
For preventing the European Synchrotron Radiation Usercommunity from harm, the HZB-management agreed to waive the beamtime fees, so that all allocated beamtime for EU-users can be approved. Users from EU-countries can apply for beamtime as in previous periods. Beamtime application and allocation follow the standard procedure for all external user groups.
Groups from European Universities, who cannot finance the costs for travel and subsistence cann apply for a HZB-support for up to two scientists per beamtime campaign.

Beamtime fees:
Only for proprietary industrial research beamtime fees are collected. Academic users can use the BESSY II services without paying any fees. The readiness to publish the scientific results within a reasonable period of time giving proper mention to the HZB is a prerequisite for the charge-free admission of external users.

Travel Support:
Limited funds are available to assist with travel and subsistence expenses for German and other European University  groups and research groups from EU-countries who cannot finance these costs from their institutes budget. Support will be granted on the basis of individual applications. In general  two persons per beamtime campaign can be supported at maximum.

Proposal Types:
Please make sure to select the right "proposal type" from the select box. Please mind that EU-I3 funding programme-Basic Research will no longer be available.

Scientific Colleges:
Please choose the most suitable college of the Scientific Selection Panel for your project from the list provided in the selection box of the online system; a short selection guide will be available in the online help.

Experimental stations:

Due to an up-grade of the 7T-Multipole-Wiggler source the experimental stations

- 7T-MPW-EDDI
- 7T-MPW-ASAXS
- 7T-MPW-magS

will be out of operation for the second semester 2012. No applications for these stations will be possible.

When you plan applying for an experimental station of a partner group or a BESSY-station, please make sure to discuss the technical possibilities in advance with the corresponding station manager. Very helpful in this issue is to make the station manager a co-proposer, thus he can read the proposal online and check if the technical requirements can be fulfilled.  Do not hesitate to contact us for guidance for the most suitable station.
