Inauguration Uppsala Berlin Joint Labs (UBjL)
We are pleased to be expanding the collaboration with Uppsala University in the Uppsala-Berlin Joint Labs (UBjL) programme and invite you to an inaugural event at BESSY II on November 4, 2015 at 2 p.m. Two new experiment stations will officially begin operation at the event in the presence of his Excellency Lars Danielsson, Swedish Ambassador to Germany. The Swedish-German working group that is part of UBjL will be operating both of the experiment stations in the future.
The Uppsala Berlin Joint Laboratory is headed by Professors Nils Mårtensson and Alexander Föhlisch and has established unique research methods for functional materials. These methods are based on angularly resolved time-of-flight electron spectroscopy (ARTOF) and MHz-pulse extraction at BESSY II. “The ARTOF instruments are being developed by Uppsala University and the firm Scienta-Omicron in Sweden with close cooperation of our German colleagues at HZB. The BESSY II synchrotron source in Berlin has the most appropriate temporal structure worldwide for using these instruments to best effect”, says Professor Svante Svensson, who is part of the UBjL-Team at BESSY II in Berlin. The Swedish-German team is investigating the native state of functional materials by using the smallest possible X-ray doses with the help of “lowDosePES” through financial resources provided by the ERC Advanced Grant awarded to Professor Mårtensson and co-financing by HZB. Additional methods permit the capture of detailed electronic structure of materials. The UBjL will also provide unique opportunities with the upgrade plans for BESSY-VSR (variable pulse-length storage ring), especially for temporally resolved electron spectroscopy in the sub-picosecond regime. This will make it possible to investigate reactions that occur at surfaces such as with catalysts, for example.
Following a brief introduction to the technology, you will be able to take a tour through the experiment hall and control room of BESSY II. At the conclusion, his Excellency the Swedish Ambassador to Germany will inaugurate operation of the two experiment stations at the controls of BESSY II in its control room. The event will conclude at about 3:15 p.m. with refreshments.
When: November 4, 2015 beginning at 2 p.m.
Where: BESSY II, Albert-Einstein-Straße 15, 12489 Berlin
Conclusion: after 3:15 p.m. with refreshments
We are pleased to invite you to the festivities and look forward to the pleasure of your company at BESSY II on November 4, 2015. RSVP or regrets please by October 29, 2015.
