Young Investigator Group NanooptiX
Since January 2017, Martina Schmid has been a professor for "Experimental Physics" at the University of Duisburg Essen. From 2012 to the end of 2016, she chaired the Helmholtz junior research group "Nanooptical Concepts for Photovoltaics" at HZB. The former junior research group was integrated into the department "Structure and Dynamics of Energy Materials". Martina Schmid will continue to supervise ongoing thesis work.
The Young Investigator Group „NanooptiX“ researched nanooptical concepts for Chalcopyrite solar cells. The Chalcoyprite Cu(In,Ga)Se2 is the material which gives the highest efficiency of any polycrystalline thin-film solar cell. However, constituents like Indium are rare and expensive elements. The aim is the reduction of the absorber material whilst maintaining or increasing the efficiency. The Young Investigator Group followed this aim by integrating optical concepts on the nano- and the micro-meter scales.
