Current information

This year Covid-19 is still present in our everyday life, but we will nonetheless have our DR Retreat in summer, as all the other years before! We invite everybody happily to join us from the 16th to 18th of June 2021.

In 2020 the retreat was done in a virtual format and it was a delight to take part in it. As you all might have already guessed it will not be possible for us to meet for an on-site event, so we will again have a virtual retreat this year. However, we did our best to bring at least a few additional activities with us to the online world. Please find more information below.

Please note that the retreat will be registered as a “Fortbildung” (training) and your registration is thus binding.

The workshops are now fully booked, thanks for all your registrations. But this of course does not mean you cannot take part in all other activities. If you like to listen to the talks (by Bernd Rech, HZB administrations, doctoral coordinators, ombudsperson, alumi and more), ask questions or like to join our two social events (dessert sharing and pubquiz) and have not registered yet write us an email directly at dr-retreat@helmholtz-berlin.de.

For all people who want to join our dessert sharing, please contact us until the 4th of June 2021. Those already participating, please remember to send us your recipe!

In case you were unsure about joining the dessert sharing or pubquiz, please let us know until the 4th of June 2021 if you want to participate!

If you have any further questions contact us at dr-retreat@helmholtz-berlin.de

The DR Retreat 2021 Team,

Marianne, Michael, Sreejith, Tatjana

Workshops offered

  1. Logical Reasoning for Scientists: The workshop will be how to structure logical arguments on scientific topics. The focus will be to equip a person with skills to construct arguments in a coherent, well-structured way and to effectively communicate this to a scientific audience. We will look into how can you use scientific texts to support and structure my argument, and how to identify a poorly constructed argument, and critically evaluate scientific information. The workshop will address both written and oral logical reasoning skills.

  2. Science Communication with Science Slam: The Science Communication workshop will be about how to communicate science in a fun and interesting way, especially for non-scientists. The focus will be on how to prepare a science slam, what should be considered when doing so, how to deconstruct the science in a way that it is easy to understand. The goal will be for everybody to have a 5 min presentation to take home, that can be used as a starting point for such communication. It should help doctoral researchers to be able to communicate their projects/knowledge to a wider community.

  3. Visual Communication of Science: This workshop explores how to express your science clearly and aesthetically pleasing to your audience. Scientist have to give presentations, write publications, make posters and communicate their science every day to others. It can be challenging to create understandable and well working figures/illustrations without knowing what a good figure is made of. The students will learn to structure and design figures that can be used for example at conferences or for publications.

All workshops are fully booked!

Dessert Sharing

Do you miss cooking and eating with friends? We at least do. So how about we bring a little bit of that with us to the online world? Imagine the dessert sharing as something like a secret Santa but with food. Normally you would pack a little package for somebody with ingredients and a recipe to make a small desert (cookies, a cocktail, …) and get one from another participant in return. On the evening of the event you would then prepare your dessert. Unfortunately, we can’t do it like this due to restrictions from the HZB. But what we can do is get people to share their favorite dessert recipe with you. If you want to participate in the sharing you will send us a dessert recipe and get one in return from another doctoral researcher. You then can buy the ingredients before the retreat and have a cooking session with us. Does this sound good to you? If so, click the checkbox while registering and we will send you a link where you can send us the recipe. If we have enough recipes we maybe will compile a small recipe book after the retreat.

Pub Quiz Night

Join us for an online pub quiz! Bring a few beers, team up and test your knowledge. To join the pub quiz, click the checkbox when registering. We will set you up in teams, or better yet, join as a 4 person team and send us your names!

Registration for the dessert sharing and pub quiz can be postponed. If you later decide you want to join, please let us know until the 4th of June 2021.

Sorry, online registration has been closed.
