E5

4-Circle Diffractometer

Instrument description

E5 is a conventional four-circle diffractometer. The instrument is equipped with a two-dimensional position sensitive 3He-detector. The monochromator take-off angle is fixed at 42°. The instrument setup is ideal for the determination of crystal and magnetic structures.

The wavelength of 0.09 nm allows the investigation of crystal structures with unit cell volumes of up to 2 nm³; the maximum value for a cell length is limited to 2.5 nm. A resonance filter (Er) is available in order to suppress λ/2 contributions. For magnetic structure determination the wavelength of 0.24 nm is accessible. A PG-filter is used to suppress λ/2 contributions.

Applications

  • investigation of crystal structures of molecular, ionic or intermetallic systems
  • determination of positional and thermal parameters of  light atoms (H, D or Li)
  • complex magnetic structures (especially to deduce weak magnetic components)
  • structural and magnetic phase transitions (interplay between structural changes and physical properties)

Selected examples

Crystal and magnetic structure of CaCu2O3

Phase transitions in HoVO3
