Poster award for Maximilian Krause at the MC2019

Maximilan Krause, master student at HZB, won a prize for the best poster at the Microscopy Conference 2019 in Berlin. He then presented his research on highly efficient chalcopyrite thin-film solar cells.

The conference took place from September 1 to 5, 2019 at the TU Berlin. In cooperation with the Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung Baden-Württemberg (ZSW), the student is working on the efficiency of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells.

Increasing the current efficiency from 22 to 25 percent and more is a major challenge. In his work, Maximilian Krause used electron microscopic methods to investigate what limits the efficiency of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells. Krause was able to exclude fluctuations in electrostatic potential distributions and local bandgap energies as causes. Instead, the recombination of charge carriers at the grain boundaries is assumed. The improvement of grain boundary properties is the subject of further research activities.
