Abstract:
Comprehensive review on the knowledge about structure and the physico-chemical properties of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers (PEM) mainly obtained with neutron reflectometry technique. The influence of preparation techniques, i.e. dip-coating and spray-coating, and the preparative conditions, as salt concentration, pH, or the chosen polyion, on the structure of PEM is discussed. Particular attention is paid to the interplay of water and PEM. Swelling and water incorporation are complex phenomena, which indirectly allow for conclusions about the crossover of the molecular interactions. Finally the use of PEM as a supporting or embedding medium for particles or biological relevant lipids or proteins is reported.
