Abstract:
Several tools are nowadays commonly applied to study the water distribution and transport in fuel cells and fuel cell components ex situ and in situ . X-ray-based methods usually suffer from the fact that most of the fuel cell components such as the end plates are an optical obstacle for the incident beam due to their metallic nature. However, X-ray-based imaging methods represent interesting tools, as the achievable resolution in space and time is usually several orders of magnitude higher compared to methods as e.g. neutron-based methods as described in Chapter 9 or electron-based microscopy ( Chapter 2 ) The following sections will start with the theoretical background of synchrotronbased imaging as well as a short introduction to different synchrotron sources. After an introduction to ex situ applications, prerequisites for in situ radiography and tomography as well as research examples are shown and discussed.
