Abstract:
The additionof200ppmstrontiumtoanAl–10wt%Sicastingalloychangesthemorphologyofthe eutecticsiliconphasefromcoarseplate-liketofinefibrousnetworks.Inordertoclarifythis modificationmechanismthelocationofSrwithintheeutecticSiphasehasbeeninvestigatedbya combinationofhigh-resolutionmethods.Whereasthree-dimensionalatomprobetomographyallows us tovisualisethedistributionofSrontheatomicscaleandtoanalyseitslocalenrichment, transmissionelectronmicroscopyyieldsinformationaboutthecrystallographicnatureofsegregated regions.SegregationswithtwokindsofmorphologieswerefoundattheintersectionsofSitwin lamellae:Sr–Al–Sico-segregationsofrod-likemorphologyandAl-richregionsofsphericalmorphology. Both areresponsiblefortheformationofahighdensityofmultipletwinsandpromotetheanisotropic growth oftheeutecticSiphaseinspecificcrystallographicdirectionsduringsolidification.The experimentalfindingsarerelatedtothepreviouslypostulatedmechanismof‘‘impurityinduced twinning’’.
