Probing functionality with soft x-rays

This workshop adresses two topics:

a) Elemental excitations in solids

We manage three endstations dedicated to Photoemission Electron Spectroscopy (PES) within our institute. Standard PES experiments can be carried out at any endstation, however the strength of the three instruments is their unique selling points and the complimentarity emerging out of them.

  • LowDosePES offers a relatively low X-Ray flux ideally suited for radiation sensitive materials and a high repetition rate (MHz) laser for pump-probe experiments.
  • CoESCA offerst the possibility measuring electrons in PES-Auger coincidence or two core levels at the same time.
  • SurfaceDynamics offer a low repetition rate (kHz) laser for pump-probe experiments with slowly decaying excitation and the possibility to to femtosecond X-Ray probe PES experiments (with very low flux).

b) active sites and dynamics in molecules and materials

The investigation of active sites in materials is a key competence on our institute. In paticular low energy excitations are of importance as they define reaction pathways and reactivity.

  • The RIXS experimental setup meV-RIXS allows high resolution RIXS measurements in the XUV range at the transition metal M-Edges as well as the N-edges of the lanthanoid series.
  • Active sites in molecules and the underlying dynamics can be probed with METRIXS, a high resolution RIXS machine in the soft x-ray range that will be dedicated to measurements on liquid and solid samples, in particular vibrationally resolved RIXS.
  • The new AXSYS beamline will combine time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy with RIXS measurements on extremely dilute molecular samples using a transition egde sensor.

These capabilities and the complementarity are discussed with results from experiments within this workshop.
