Crystal Lab
The Crystal Lab suite integrates chemical instruments and methods necessary to synthesize novel materials. Typical materials are new low dimensional magnets or substances which are technically important, e.g. superconductors, multiferroics or thermoelectrics.
We provide many methods to control the material synthesis from the initial constituents to the final products – the samples for our research at HZB. Important are high temperature furnaces where up to 3000°C can be reached using different gas atmosphere
The access to the Crystal Lab is open for members of the HZB. The resources are accessible through the booking system. Users will be trained so that they are able to follow their synthesis plans independently. We also welcome external users, but the contact must be mediated by members of the HZB.
Box Furnace #1-5:
The typical use is the reaction of precursors. All box furnaces are open to air. For maximum sample size and the temperature range see specifications. Please note that due to limited electrical power supplies not all ovens can be operated simultaneously.
Box Furnace #6:
The typical use is the reaction of precursors. The furnace is placed in a chemical fume hood, therefore also certain toxic materials can be treated. For maximum sample size and the temperature range see specifications. Please note that due to limited electrical power supplies not all ovens can be operated simultaneously.
Tube Furnace #1,2,3
The typical use is the reaction of precursors. The furnace allows preparations under special atmosphere and vacuum. For the maximum sample size, available gas atmosphere and the temperature range see specifications. Please note that due to limited electrical power supplies not all ovens can be operated simultaneously.
Tube Furnace #3:
The typical use is the reaction of precursors. The furnace is placed in a chemical fume hood, therefore also certain toxic materials can be treated. The heater element can be rotated, therefore flux growth methods are possible. For maximum sample size and the temperature range see specifications. Please note that due to limited electrical power supplies not all ovens can be operated simultaneously.
