HZB Machine Learning Hackathon 2022

We are happy to announce the third HZB Machine Learning Hackathon 2022, which will be held from October 17-21 with a preparation day on 14th of October.

We want to bring together master and PhD students with a data science background and early career scientists (PhD to early Postdoc) from internationally renowned research institutions who apply machine learning to solve pressing challenges in the natural sciences.

In order to have a successful hackathon, the following format will be adopted:

  • A preparation day on Friday (October 14) – preceding the actual Hackathon week! – is mandatory for everybody in order to provide an effective learning environment.
  • The experienced groups will start with one day filled with a mixture of lectures, keynotes and a thorough introduction into their hackathon project.
  • The introduction will be followed by four full days diving deep into their hackathon project with an ML mentor as well as a domain scientist.

Conditions for Participation

  • Solid knowledge of python and open-source machine learning packages (e.g. sklearn, PyTorch or Tensorflow) is expected as well as experience in solving data analysis challenges with ML methods.

All hackathon projects will be real-world examples from the world of the applied natural sciences which means that knowledge in physics, chemistry, and/or material science will be advantageous. The projects reflect current challenges at HZB and cover a variety of potential ML applications such as GANs for the creation of a digital twin of batteries, image registration for sample exploration with multiple detectors, optical character recognition for library images of old paper publications, the creation of an agent to align a detector and a camera as well as the challenge of Laplace inversion for material science.

Please use the registration form.

If you are interested in joining, please include a short motivation statement (max. ½ page) and your CV (max. 1 page) in your application.

You will receive notice from us before October 2, 2022. As the number of places is limited, we may have to reject your application.

Deadline for applications is September 25, 2022 (midnight, GMT+2).

After applying you will get more details about the projects and the opportunity to choose your top 3 in order to be in a project that you are interested in and will most benefit from your skills.

In case of application withdrawal, we will immediately fill up vacant positions from the waiting list.

Participation Fee

The hackathon is free of charge for all participants.
