School Lab

Energy - Converting and Storing

maximum of 24 participants
grades 11-13: 9 am till 3 pm

Which forms of energy do we know and how do we convert one into another?

Focus of the day are renewable energies like wind power and photovolatic. Through experiments pupils will optimise the parameters of a wind turbine and analyse the behaviour of solar modules to find their maximum power point (MPP).

Using windpower and photovoltaic as an example we will look at the process of converting energy and talk about the loss of energy during the conversion. Through measuring the transmitted energy quantities, pupils will learn to define the efficieny of those energy conversion processes. Later we will look at the efficiency of storing energy in rechargeable batteries and fuel cells as well as the processes of a pumped-storage hydroelectricity.

A presentation provides insight into the research done at the HZB. A visit of a laboratory is also possible. Here scientists take the time to present their topics of research and answer questions.

At last a quiz in which pupils can verify their answers for themselves will help to wrap up the day.

It is possible to have lunch at the cafeteria.
