Australian top-chemist gains Helmholtz International Fellowship to visit HZB and HZDR
Prof. Dr. Leone Spiccia will spent research time at HZB next spring.
Prof. Dr. Leone Spiccia from the Monash University Melbourne was awarded the Helmholtz International Fellowship. In addition to the prize money of €20,000 each, he is invited to conduct research at HZB in Berlin and HZDR in Dresden. At HZB he is expected in spring 2015 in the group of Prof. Dr. Emad Aziz. The award honours excellent research and supports establishing new cooperation structures with international research institutions.
Scientists from HZDR and HZB nominated Prof Spiccia. HZB scientists Prof. Dr. Emad Aziz, Prof. Dr. Klaus Lips und Dr. Alexander Schnegg underligned his significant contributions to energy materials research, whereas Dr. Holger Stephan und Prof. Jörg Steinbach from HZDR acknowledged his results on nanomaterials in cancer research.
In total, eight outstanding scientists have been selected as Helmholtz International Fellows this year. Candidates must be nominated for the award by a Helmholtz Centre working in a similar research field as the respective candidates. The quality of the candidates' research is the most important criterion for the award. Nominations may be made at any time. The Helmholtz Executive Committee selects the award winners.

- Israel Ibukun Olaniyan receives the Helmholtz Doctoral Award 2026At Helmholtz, more than 8,000 doctoral candidates conduct research. Eleven of them have now been honored for their original and outstanding work, among them Dr Israel Ibukun Olaniyan from the HZB. His doctoral thesis "Ferroelectricity at the nanoscale in epitaxial BaTiO3 on silicon" in the group of Professor Catherine Dubourdieu represents a step towards a new nanoelectronics based on topological defects, that can potentially help to create an energy efficient information technology.
- HZB congratulates Peter Hegemann on winning the Nobel PrizeOur warmest congratulations go to Peter Hegemann, Professor of Neuroscience and Experimental Biophysics at Humboldt University in Berlin. Together with Prof. Georg Nagel (Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg) and Prof. Karl Deisseroth (Stanford University, USA), he has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. We are delighted for him, his team, Humboldt University and the entire Berlin scientific community.
- Does African Architecture exist?The world’s first Pan-African Architecture Biennale took place this September in Nairobi, Kenya. People from the worlds of architecture, art, academia and politics from 54 African countries and the diaspora had travelled to Nairobi to exchange ideas on traditional and contemporary building methods, materials, experiences and projects.
