Proton Irradiation

Besides the the treatment of ocular melanoma, HZB offers the possibility to irradiate solar cells, electronic devices, and systems, with protons from the HZB cyclotron.

The standard proton beam is the therapeutic beam with an energy of 68 MeV. Lower energies are achieved quickly by the insertion of degrader plates.

The size of the beam spot varies from 50 mm diameter with a homogenous intensity distribution down to 1 mm (focused). Typical applied proton intensities vary from 104 protons/cm² to 1013 protons/cm².

The devices under test are mounted on a xy-table with a stroke of 500 mm in ambient atmosphere. The maximum weight of the samples for the table is 50 kg. They can be operated under irradiation. An ionisation chamber surveys the proton fluence on-line.

On request, irradiations in vacuum are feasible.
