On-site duties after your arrival

The following points should be considered immediately after your arrival on-site at BESSY II.


Registration & Safety Training

All users are required to check in at the HZB USER OFFICE reception desk and have a valid SAFETY TRAINING done in GATE prior to any activity at HZB. An ID Card will grant access to BESSY II buildings and the experimental hall. For additional information about registration procedures and the BESSY II safety training, please contact the HZB User Office. The reception desk of HZB User Office in Berlin-Adlershof is located on the 1st floor of the BESSY II main building and the office hours are as follows.

Monday - Thursday 9:00 - 11:30  and  12:30 - 15:30
Friday 9:00 - 11:30  and  12:30 - 14:30

Users arriving during weekends or after working hours are requested to contact the HZB User Office prior to their arrival in order to arrange for temporary access to the facility.


Yellow Boards

When you arrive at your experiment please complete a YELLOW BOARD (BESSY II on-site access only) indicating users names, dangerous equipment, hazardous substances and an emergency phone number. You will find a description on how to complete the Yellow Board at every beamline. Please attach all safety data sheets (SDS) of your chemicals to the Yellow Board.


BESSY II Hallendienst

In order to conduct your experiment HZB provides a comprehensive technical infrastructure which is adapted to your requirements. The HZB department of TECHNICAL USER SUPPORT is responsible for setting up, operating and developing this infrastructure. Since user operation at BESSY II is offered continuously from Tuesday morning to Sunday evening, technical support is also maintained outside regular working hours at nighttime and on weekends. In addition HZB provides continuous support during regular working hours. The Hallendienst is the first point of contact for all your technical problems and consists of technical and scientific HZB employees well versed in user support.

In case of any problem, please call the 'Hallendienst' at 12984.
The 'Hallendienst' supports all BESSY II users 24 hours a day and is the first point of contact.

Technical User Support

HZB offers access to a large variety of photon instruments at its facility BESSY II. All instruments, beamlines and stations can be used in combination with a wide range of dedicated sample environment devices. In addition, various dedicated user support labs are available as well as supply and technical workshops. Please contact the TECHNICAL USER SUPPORT for questions relating to

  • General on-site assistance and job safety
  • Transportation, parking and storage of equipment
  • Consumables, equipment, tools
  • Access to mechanical workshop
  • Access to lab facilities (e.g. chemistry lab, Biolab...)
  • Supplies (power, water, air, LN2, LHe...)
  • Disposal

Gastronomy & Shops

Several RESTAURANTS and bistros are available nearby. For late nights or weekends you will find refreshments in the vending machines in our cafeteria. If you prefer to make your own arrangements, feel free to use the newly renovated common kitchen area in the first floor of the BESSY II building. There are also several food delivery services covering the area and a very large supermarket is located very close by at the local mall (Adlershofer Tor/KAUFLAND, Rudower Chaussee, Mo-Sa 7am-10pm). Please keep in mind, that some grocers and restaurants may not always open on Sundays or in the evening.
