On-site duties after your arrival

The following points should be considered immediately after your arrival on-site at BESSY II.

Registration and Safety Training

All users are required to check in at the HZB User Office reception desk and have a valid safety training done in GATE prior to any activity at HZB. An ID Card will grant access to BESSY II buildings and the experimental hall. For additional information about registration procedures and the BESSY II safety training, please contact the HZB User Office.

The reception desk of HZB User Office in Berlin-Adlershof is located on the 1st floor of the BESSY II main building and the office hours are as follows.

Monday-Thursday 9:00-11:30 and 12:30-15:30
Friday 9:00-11:30 and 12:30-14:30

Users arriving during weekends or after working hours are requested to contact the HZB User Office prior to their arrival in order to arrange for temporary access to the facility.

Yellow Boards

When you arrive at your experiment please complete a Yellow Board (BESSY II on-site access only) indicating users names, dangerous equipment, hazardous substances and an emergency phone number. You will find a description on how to complete the Yellow Board at every beamline. Please attach all safety data sheets (SDS) of your chemicals to the Yellow Board.

BESSY II Hallendienst

In order to conduct your experiment HZB provides a comprehensive technical infrastructure which is adapted to your requirements. The HZB department of Technical User Support is responsible for setting up, operating and developing this infrastructure. Since user operation at BESSY II is offered continuously from Tuesday morning to Sunday evening, technical support is also maintained outside regular working hours at nighttime and on weekends. In addition HZB provides continuous support during regular working hours. The 'Hallendienst' is the first point of contact for all your technical problems and consists of technical and scientific HZB employees well versed in user support.

In case of any problem, please call the 'Hallendienst' at 12984. The 'Hallendienst' supports all BESSY II users 24 hours a day and is the first point of contact.

The phone number is also given on the BESSY II on-site information system.

BESSY II User Coffee - Come have a chat with us

We want to hear from you: your research, your experiments, your frustrations with the screw that rolled under the table, your successes - all about your days at HZB. Let us know what is going well and what is going less well - we will try to improve the one and solve the other.

Every second or third week, we welcome users for a chat with a cup of coffee and a pastry outside the control room. Come around and meet the User coordination team, relax with your beamline scientist, inspire and be inspired by our accelerator scientists, recharge your caffeine levels for the final stretch of the week.

Due to the dynamic development of the Corona crisis the BESSY II User Coffee is suspended until the shutdown. We hope that we can continue in round 2020/2 starting mid October 2020.

Starting at 2:30 pm in front of the control room, come by for coffee, pastry, and good company!

Every now and then, before the coffee break, join us in the Aquarium (room 14.51-3303) and hear about something new at BESSY II at one of the "What can we do for you?" talks.
Let us know which topic you would like to learn more about or if you’re interested in presenting something yourself – by dropping us a line at photons@helmholtz-berlin.de.

Gastronomy and Shops

Several restaurants and bistros are available nearby.

For late nights or weekends you will find refreshments in the vending machines in our cafeteria. If you prefer to make your own arrangements, feel free to use the newly renovated common kitchen area in the first floor of the BESSY II building.

There are also several food delivery services covering the area and a very large supermarket is located very close by at the local mall (Adlershofer Tor/Kaufland, Rudower Chaussee, Mo-Sa 7am-10pm).

Please keep in mind, that some grocers and restaurants may not always open on Sundays or in the evening.
