From Curiosity to Contribution
Every morning begins the same way. I put on my lab coat, prepare my electrochemical setup, and wait for the first measurement of the day to appear on my screen. Even though I have repeated the procedure many times over the past weeks, I still find myself wondering: Will today's experiment behave differently from yesterday's?
That question has quietly become my favourite part of my internship at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin.
This summer, I am working on improving the performance of inexpensive steel meshes for green hydrogen production. At first glance, a small piece of steel does not seem particularly exciting. But spending time in the lab has shown me how even the simplest materials can become part of solving much larger challenges. Every experiment involves changing only a few parameters, carefully analysing the results and asking whether the next trial can be even better than the previous one.
One thing I quickly realise is that research rarely follows a straight path.
Some experiments produce exactly what I expect, while others raise more questions than they answer. At university, I am used to experiments where there is usually a "correct" result waiting at the end. Here, there isn't. Instead of feeling frustrated when something unexpected happens, I have started asking why it happened. Those moments often lead to the most interesting discussions and sometimes reveal opportunities to improve the experimental procedure.
One of my most rewarding moments comes when I identify several possible optimisations in my experiments and discuss them with my supervisor. Hearing that my observations are appreciated gives me confidence that, even as a summer student, I can contribute ideas instead of simply following instructions. It is a reminder that curiosity is valuable only when it leads to careful observation and thoughtful contribution.
Outside the experiments themselves, I find the research culture just as fascinating.
Coming from India, I notice many small differences that gradually reshape the way I think about research. One thing that surprises me is how naturally scientific discussions happen. People openly question results, suggest alternative explanations and exchange ideas regardless of experience. At first, I think asking too many questions might make me appear unprepared. Instead, I discover that asking good questions is considered an important part of the research process.
Another pleasant surprise is the people.
Before arriving at HZB, I imagine PhD students as experts who would always seem busy and slightly intimidating. Instead, they are approachable, enthusiastic and genuinely happy to discuss experiments, explain concepts or simply chat over coffee. Watching them work together has changed my perception of academic research. It feels less like individual work and more like a collaborative effort where everyone is working towards a common goal.
Something else I don't expect is how quickly the laboratory begins to feel familiar.
Without really noticing, I start staying longer than the hours I am expected to. Not because anyone asks me to, but because I genuinely want to run one more experiment, compare one more dataset or understand one more unexpected result before going home. The laboratory gradually stops feeling like a workplace and starts feeling like a place where I enjoy spending my time.
The ISSP programme also gives us opportunities to step outside our own laboratories and experience the broader world of science. Visiting the Einstein Tower reminds me that many of today's discoveries are built upon questions asked generations ago. Seeing BESSY II for the first time is equally unforgettable. Standing inside such an extraordinary scientific facility, surrounded by beamlines and researchers from many different fields, makes me realise how much collaboration and innovation are required to understand materials that are almost invisible to the human eye.
These experiences make me look differently at my own project. While my work focuses on a small steel mesh, it is connected to a much larger goal: making future green hydrogen technologies more efficient and affordable. It is inspiring to see how individual contributions fit into a much bigger scientific picture.
As my internship continues, I realise that the title of this experience writes itself.
I arrive at HZB driven by curiosity.
Every experiment, every conversation and every unexpected result slowly transforms that curiosity into contribution.
The experiments are still continuing, there are still many questions to answer, and I certainly don't have all the answers yet. But every morning, when I walk back into the laboratory, I know exactly what I am looking forward to.
