Helmholtz Imaging is calling for the Best Scientific Image 2023
Submit your scientific image(s) for a chance to win Helmholtz Imaging Best Scientific Image 2023! The deadline for submission is Wednesday, 15 March 2023.
The image competitions in 2021 and 2022 have been a great success, and the winning images travelled Germany to showcase the outstanding portfolio of the Helmholtz Association in imaging and the contribution of imaging science in solving major societal challenges.
Images submitted for competition can be the result of any imaging technique developed or applied at Helmholtz Centers or they may be the result of combining several of those images into one artistic image. An appealing, comprehensible explanation must be submitted with the image, providing background information on the scientific nature, remarkableness and origin of the image.
The contest is open to anyone who works at a Helmholtz Center.An international jury will award valuable prizes worth a total of 6000€ donated by Beiersdorf, Siemens Healthineers and Zeiss Microscopy.
Awarding is based on scientific significance, originality, and artistic and/or visual impact of the image.The winning images will be displayed at the Helmholtz Imaging Conference 2023 (14-16 June 2023) and made available to the public and the media as well as to scientific institutions. In addition, 12 winning images will be published in the Helmholtz Imaging calendar 2024 and 20 of the best images will be part of a travelling exhibition and being displayed in different Helmholtz Centers and beyond.

The program is aimed primarily at master students and other early stage researchers in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, and life or environmental sciences. Students will be introduced to advanced synchrotron- and laboratory-based photon science methods that probe the physical, chemical, and electronic structures of materials as well as the function and dynamics of complex material systems.
Deadline for application is December 5th, 2022, and acceptance for participation will be communicated by December 12th, 2022.

SXR2023 brings together young and experienced scientists to discuss recent scientific highlights, trends, and current advances with soft X-ray spectroscopy. Our goal is to further understanding on the atomic level. The impetus is to influence and ideally shape functionality in materials and molecular systems. In this effort, scientists cross intentionally the boundaries between physics, chemistry and materials and focus on the unifying aspects of functionality. Insights to the governing principles are often based on the combination of experiment with first principles theory and models. Thus a profound description of X-ray matter interaction — creating the spectroscopic observables — is always underlying.
