    1st Biennial LEAPS ConferenceThe goals of the conference are:Presenting an overview on state-of-the-art quantum technologies and how current X-ray probes contribute to this field.Providing a platform for the diverse communities to interact.Defining needs and actions to promote X-ray based probes to contribute to the progress in quantum technologies.

    An important part of the conference will be tutorial sessions allowing a deep insight in quantum technologies and in synchrotron radiation methods, also for non-experts.We are accepting abstracts for contributed talks.Please register by 11 Feb. 2022 (deadline postponed)

    Dr Anusuriya Devaraju (Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network - TERN)

    Title: FAIR – Assessment or Improvement?

    Abstract: Funders, publishers, and data service providers have strongly endorsed applying FAIR principles to maximize the reuse of research data since the principles were published in 2016. Much of existing work on FAIR assessment focuses on ‘what’ needs to be measured, which led to the development of assessment metrics. However, the questions of ‘how’ to measure the FAIRness of the research data and use the assessment results to improve data reuse haven't been fully demonstrated in yet practice. This presentation will cover some insights on these aspects derived from the development of a practical solution (F-UJI) to measure the progress of FAIR aspects of data programmatically.

    Nanoelectronic Phenomena in Low-Dimensional Ferroelectrics

    Professor Alexei Gruverman

    Professor Alexei Gruverman is, from April 2022 and for few months, the guest of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. He was granted a Humboldt Research Award in October 2020 (but could not travel to Germany until this year due to the COVID pandemic). The Humboldt Research Award recognizes his outstanding research achievements in the field of fundamental studies of nanoscale physical phenomena in a wide range of materials using a variety of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) methods. He has pioneered the development of piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), which since its inception has become a method of choice in both academic and industrial groups  for the investigation of the nanoscale properties of ferroelectrics. Other major scientific accomplishments include the manipulation of ferroelectric domains at the nanoscale, the development of an approach for fast switching dynamics in ferroelectric capacitors, the demonstration of the tunneling electroresistance effect in ferroelectrics and nanoscale studies of electromechanical behavior of biological systems. 

    The Kolloquium will be followed by a buffet (finger food/beverages), which will provide a good opportunity to gather and continue the discussion with him.

However, anyone who has ever tried to find data that is only a few years old on the global web and then reuse it with up-to-date software knows that digital information can very well get lost. To ensure that this does not happen to valuable research data, numerous players in science are currently working on making this data as FAIR as possible - findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.

    First International Conference "Challenges on the Renewable Energy Storage"

    Without doubt you will agree with us that the development and deployment of novel energy concept addressing both environmental as well as energy independence concerns is perhaps the largest challenge of chemical industry in the 21st century. As you know from your own experience these issues are subject to discussion of the community for several years now, although the recent Covid-19 pandemic which prevented face to face meeting for the past two years subdued somewhat the information exchange of the topic. The war in Ukraine drastically calls for an even accelerated transformation of our energy system including aspects of energy security.

    Nevertheless, the field of catalysis-supported energy concepts never lost its importance and urgency. The Fritz-Haber Institute of the Max-Planck Society and the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry have worked together on these concepts for a long time. With the support of the new research platform CatLab, we are in a position to facilitate the discussions in the community by organizing the first international conference “Challenges on renewable energy storage”. The conference aims at bringing together leaders of the field in catalysis, electrocatalysis and their technological implementation, fostering the exchange of views on the most recent development and renewing the necessary interdisciplinary networks broken by the pandemic.

    The conference will take place under personal auspices of Mrs. Helena Langšádlová, the Minister of Science, Research and Innovation of the Czech Republic and is listed in the official programme of the Czech presidency to the Council of EU. Consequently, the European funding agencies are expected to be heavily represented along with other important stakeholders.

    Quantsol Summer School

    Vom 4. bis 11. September informiert die Quantsol Summer School 2022 über Grundlagen der solaren Energieumwandlung.

    Die International Summer School on Photovoltaics and New Concepts of Quantum Solar Energy Conversion (Quantsol) findet im September 2022 in Hirschegg, Kleinwalsertal, Österreich statt. Bewerbungen können bis zum 7. Juni 2022 eingereicht werden. Organisiert wird die Schule vom Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin und der Technischen Universität Ilmenau.

    Die eingeladenen Referenten, allesamt international anerkannte Wissenschaftler aus weltweit führenden Institutionen, werden in ihren Vorträgen die grundlegenden Prinzipien der Umwandlung von Sonnenenergie in chemische und elektrische Energie sowie die physikalischen und technischen Herausforderungen ihrer technologischen Umsetzung behandeln. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der solarspezifischen Materialwissenschaft und deren Charakterisierung. Darüber hinaus bietet die Schule praktische Übungen zum Bau einer eigenen Solarzelle sowie eine Einführung in die Solarzellensimulation.
