HZB Scientist Frank Siewert wins Giovanni Sostero Award
Congratulations to Frank Siewert, who just won the 2015 International Giovanni Sostero Award
Frank Siewert was honored in particular for his contributions on the development of latest metrology for Synchrotron Optics. He has “pushed the limits of X-ray optics metrology to an unprecedented level and gave a collaborative and constructive support to the international community on metrology for X-ray optics” as the awarding committee pointed out.
The award was handed over to Frank Siewert in a ceremony during the 6th “International Workshop on X-Ray Optics and Metrology” which was held from July 14th–16th at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California USA. This award also recognizes the leading position of the HZB Optical Metrology Laboratory within the synchrotron community.
The award is granted every 3rd year in memory of Giovanni Sostero who formerly was in charge of the Soft X-ray Metrology Laboratory at Elettra in Trieste. It honors scientists who contributed significantly to the development of the metrology for latest X-ray optics.
- Humboldt-Fellow at HZB-Institute for Solar Fuels: Alexander R. UhlAlexander R. Uhl, UBC Okanagan School of Engineering in Kelowna, Canada, aims to develop with Roel van de Krol from the HZB Institute for Solar Fuels an efficient and inexpensive photoelectrolyser for producing hydrogen using sunlight. His stay is being funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
- Bernd Rech elected to the BR50 Board of DirectorsThe Scientific Director at Helmholt-Zentrum Berlin is the new face behind the "Natural Sciences" unit at Berlin Research 50 (BR50). Following the election in December 2025, the constituent meeting of the new BR50 Board of Directors took place on 22 January 2026.
Its members are Michael Hintermüller (Weierstrass Institute, WIAS), Noa K. Ha (German Centre for Integration and Migration Research, DeZIM), Volker Haucke (Leibniz Research Institute for Molecular Pharmacology, FMP), Uta Bielfeldt (German Rheumatism Research Centre Berlin, DRFZ) and Bernd Rech (HZB).
- HZB expert appointed chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Barcelona Research CentreProf. Dr. Susan Schorr has been appointed to the newly established Scientific Advisory Board of the Barcelona Research Centre in Multiscale Science and Engineering and elected as its chair.
