On 20 November 2018, user operation of BESSY II restarted after a longer shutdown and maintenance period. The electron storage ring was shut down on July 30, 2018 to install or replace important components.

The parallel work in the storage ring was extremely complex. Among other things, the test stand for the electron gun was rebuilt at a different location because the original space was needed to build the cooling supply for BESSY VSR. For this reason, the radiation protection hut of the EDDI-Beamline was also dismantled. In addition, the Landau cavities were installed and two wavelength shifters were overhauled. Particularly spectacular was the transport of the cryogenic undulator CPMU17 into the storage ring. It supplies the Energy Materials In-Situ Lab with tender X-rays. The undulator has now been installed and will be put into operation in several steps.

Next year, preparations for the realization of BESSY VSR will enter the next round. Then even the opening of the BESSYII roof is planned.
