  • LEAPS INNOV Battery Research Forum 2025

Following the lively discussions and successful exchange on battery-related research at the first LEAPS-INNOV forum in January 2024 in Barcelona, this second event, named “Roadmap to the clean energy transition: How can LEAPS facilities support knowledge transfer”, is organized at HZB by WP9 of the LEAPS-INNOV project. This second forum focuses on developing concrete steps for drafting roadmap towards the clean energy transition. The forum will take place on the 27-29th of January 2025 in Berlin.

Key-player also is transferring knowledge achievements from academic institutions to industry and using the research results for applications to tackle societal challenges. As this process currently appears to be fragile, a session of the forum will be dedicated to industry. Within problem-oriented brainstorming sessions, industry representatives are invited to present their most demanding scientific questions, accessing the expertise of all participants and experts from related fields to develop methodologies for overcoming those challenges.

Enabling lively discussions and knowledge exchange, this forum aims to foster already established dialogues and creating new links within the battery community.

Target audience: LEAPS facility staff working with tools tackling battery research, user community representatives actively involved in developments and industry representatives

Future Innovators' "Hightech Design Sprint" – March 2025

Professor Jeroen Bergman (Oxford University, Head of Technology/Innovation at the University of Southern Denmark, visiting Prof. Harvard &MIT)

    T

The Hightech Design Sprint teaches a method to identify opportunities to transfer knowledge and technologies by letting teams free-dive into busy scenarios in an industry immersion to shadow experts and observe their work at the first two workshop days to understand problems and extract valuable opportunities for innovation during the rest of the week. Learning and practising Need Identification is the program's core, the foundation for efficient start-ups with high potential impact through a validated understanding of a problem!

    What to learn:

-Identify Problems and Needs; don't waste resources on useless solutions

-Define measurable outcome; prevent losing the need during development

-Analyse and filter ideas; are they worth brain power and money?

-Exploit inter-disciplinary teams and diverse professional perspectives

-Rapid development of Proof-of-Concepts, MVPs or Prototypes

Timo Christian of DESYs Start-up Office and Professor Jeroen Bergmann, Professor at Oxford and Head of the Department of Technology and Innovation at the University of Southern Denmark, will guide us through the Future Innovators' need-led innovation boot camp. This is a unique opportunity to learn from extensive experiences and gain insights on transforming your knowledge into innovation.

Sign up to be part of a multi-discipline workshop team and try need-led innovation yourself for one week in our Future Innovators Academy.

ACEM Symposium at the MDC Buch

    Invitation and call for posters

The Alliance Centre Electron Microscopy (ACEM) of the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) cordially invites you to the ACEM Symposium "Bridging Electron Microscopy in Life Sciences and Material Sciences - Common Challenges and Opportunities", which will take place on 22 and 23 July 2025 at the MDC Buch.

The symposium will focus on the interdisciplinary exchange between life sciences and material sciences in the field of electron microscopy. Both disciplines are driving the development of this key technology from different perspectives - and are increasingly benefiting from each other. For example, the life sciences are introducing highly sensitive, spatially resolved detectors for their highly sensitive samples, which also benefit the materials sciences in terms of more precise measurements of physical relationships. Conversely, developments in spatial resolution in materials science are opening up new possibilities in biological imaging. The use of big data and artificial intelligence is another common theme for the future that can bring both fields closer together.

With this symposium, ACEM would like to specifically address students and young scientists from the BUA and BR50 areas and encourage them to actively participate. In particular, they are invited to submit a poster for one of the following sessions:

    - Volume SEM

    - Artificial Intelligence in Electron Microscopy

    - Quantitative Phase-sensitive S/TEM-Methods

    - In Operando and Time Resolved EM

Lecture: Empowering children in the digital world | Communication, development and mental health (45 Min)

    benefit@work

    12:00 o'clock

Empowering children in the digital world: communication, development, and mental healthBetween TikTok trends, gaming marathons, and social media stars, children and young people today live in a highly connected, fast-paced world—full of opportunities, but also full of challenges. Mental health, self-perception, and social development can easily become unbalanced when digital content is consumed without reflection.

This presentation shows how parents can support and empower their children in the digital world – with a focus on media literacy, self-image, and emotional resilience. It is not about pitting the analog world against the digital world, but about finding a healthy balance, conscious use, and open communication. You will receive ideas on how to specifically promote soft skills such as creativity, self-confidence, and critical media reflection—and how the family home and the digital world can work together to contribute to healthy growth.

Speaker: Karl-Heinz Zmugg, trauma consultant & prevention expert for media issues

The event is in German, but if you have a basic knowledge of German, you are welcome to attend and listen to the lecture.

  • BESSY@HZB User Meeting

With the series of annual user meetings we bring together our user community to intensify scientific exchange and stimulating new collaborations. The meetings will provide an overview of the many exciting and inspiring research results obtained at our facility in the past year. Plenary talks, discussions, a public lecture and a poster session will provide vast possibilities of information and discussion. The bestowals of the 'Prizes for Young Scientists' donated by the Freundeskreis Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin e.V. (FHZB) are traditional highlights of the user meetings.
