BESSY@HZB User Meeting
With the series of annual user meetings we bring together our user community to intensify scientific exchange and stimulating new collaborations. The meetings will provide an overview of the many exciting and inspiring research results obtained at our facility in the past year. Plenary talks, discussions, a public lecture and a poster session will provide vast possibilities of information and discussion. The bestowals of the 'Prizes for Young Scientists' donated by the Freundeskreis Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin e.V. (FHZB) are traditional highlights of the user meetings.
The 16th BESSY@HZB User Meeting 2024 will take place 11 to 12 December at the WISTA Event Center in Berlin-Adlershof. Participation in the user meeting is free of charge.
*** The registration form is closed. Thank you very much for your interest. ***

Country of Honour 2024 - Romania
To make international integration and cooperation more visible, each BESSY@HZB User Meeting will be accompanied by a country of honour. This year’s country of honour is Romania and we are pleased to invite 10 Romanian scientists from different Romanian Universities who will participate in the user meeting.
This invitation is directed to post docs and junior professors at the early stage of their scientific career. We will organise an interesting programme with laboratory tours and scientific lectures. HZB will reimburse travel expenses up to 500 Euros and provides accommodation in our guesthouse from December 9 (Monday) to December 13 (Friday) free of charge.
The registration form is closed. Thank you very much for your interest.
Public Lecture
We are pleased to welcome you to a PUBLIC LECTURE at the BUNSEN HALL of the WISTA Event Center given by Dr. Christopher Pöhlker (Max Planck Institut für Chemie, Germany) on Atmospheric Research in the Amazon: Photons, Aerosols, Clouds and a Flavor of Adventure:
"The Amazon rain forest plays key roles in the carbon and water cycles, biodiversity, and the climate system. However, it has already been altered significantly by human activities, and more pervasive change is expected to occur. Of particular concern is the interplay between deforestation, fire, and drought, which could lead to the loss of carbon storage, change precipitation patterns, and potentially trigger an irreversible transformation of the entire ecosystem.
A fascinating facet of the research in the Amazon is the intense water cycle, where evapotranspiration, cloud formation and precipitation not only sustain the rainforest, but also influence regional and global climate patterns. For clouds and precipitation to form, tiny airborne particles known as atmospheric aerosols are needed to condense water vapor into cloud droplets. The concentration of these particles over the rain forest varies significantly, ranging from very clean, preindustrial-like conditions during the wet season to dense smoke pollution from widespread fires in the dry season. How these strong changes in pollution alter clouds and, thus, the water cycle as the Achilles’ heel of the ecosystem remains a critical yet unresolved question.
Here, I will take you on a tour into the Amazon rain forest, show you what our research at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (https://www.attoproject.org/) in the heart of the Amazon Basin is about and demonstrate how BESSY II helps us to literally shed light on some of the biggest open questions."
The PUBLIC LECTURE is open to the public, a registration is not required.
Poster Session
The poster session is an excellent opportunity to present and discuss your latest research results. A committee will recognize the best poster presentation and will select a 'Best Poster Award' winner on the basis of the poster's content, appearance and presentation quality. Poster award winners must be present during winners announcement time to be eligible for the 'Best Poster Award'. All posters will be on display in the BESSY II experimental hall until next year's user meeting.
Please note that all posters have to be in DIN A0 landscape format: 120 cm (width) x 84 cm (height) |
In case you need to print your poster on site, please go HERE.
Vendor Exhibition
An important part of our user meeting is the vendor exhibition, which is running alongside the meeting. We provide your organisation with the great opportunity to present your products to a large number of high impact customers. Each year we expect some 300 participants; surely a significant number for presenting your company, and a good chance to get in contact with new customers using synchrotron radiation and performing experiments at BESSY II. For more detailed information on how to join the vendor exhibtion please go to the vendor exhibition webpage.
