BESSY@HZB User Meeting
With the series of annual user meetings we bring together our user community to intensify scientific exchange and stimulating new collaborations. The meetings will provide an overview of the many exciting and inspiring research results obtained at our facility in the past year. Plenary talks, discussions, a public lecture and a poster session will provide vast possibilities of information and discussion. The bestowals of the 'Prizes for Young Scientists' donated by the Freundeskreis Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin e.V. (FHZB) are traditional highlights of the user meetings.
The 15th BESSY@HZB User Meeting 2023 will take place on June 22 to 23 as a summer meeting on-site and live at the WISTA conference center in Berlin-Adlershof. Participation in the user meeting is free of charge.
Country of Honour 2023
From now on - to make international integration and cooperation more visible - each BESSY@HZB User Meeting will be accompanied by a country of honour. This year’s country of honour is Kenya and we are pleased to welcome 17 Kenyan scientists and students from six Kenyan Universities who will participate in a twinning programme and in the user meeting.
The BESSY@HZB User Meeting includes the following highlights:
- The Synchrotron Session, the Public Lecture and the Bestowal of Prizes will take place on Thursday, June 22
- Science Highlights will be presented on Thursday, June 22 and Friday, June 23
- The dedicated Young Scientist Session will be held on Friday, June 23
- The meeting will be concluded with a thrilling Poster Slam and a Poster Session on Friday afternoon
- Celebration for the 25th anniversary of BESSY II on Friday evening (for registered participants only)
This year's Public Lecture, a Public Panel Discussion on "Science Diplomacy, International Collaboration and the Contribution of Synchrotrons to Cooperative Solutions" will certainly be the highlight of the programme. We are very delighted to present the following highly regarded panel list:
Prof. Dr. Rolf-Dieter Heuer (former General Director of CERN)
Prof. Dr. Sekazi K. Mtingwa (Co-Founder and Chair, LAAAMP Executive Committee)
Dr. Gihan Kamel (Physicist at SESAME)
Dr. Lucy Ombaka (Lecturer Technical University of Kenya)
Dr. Yazmin Lucero Cobos Becerra (Strategy Dept. Energy and Information, HZB)
Moderation - Prof. Dr. Rutger Schlatmann (PVcomB, HZB)
The Public Panel Discussion takes place on Thursday, June 22 from 17:15 to 18:30 at the WISTA conference center in Berlin-Adlershof. The Panel Discussion is open to the public, a registration is not required.
Poster Session & Poster Slam
The poster session is an excellent opportunity to present and discuss your latest research results. A committee will recognize the best poster presentation and will select a 'Best Poster Award' winner on the basis of the poster's content, appearance and presentation quality. Poster award winners must be present during winners announcement time to be eligible for the 'Best Poster Award'. All posters will be on display in the BESSY II experimental hall until next year's user meeting. The poster session will be accompanied by a poster slam - live and on stage - on Friday afternoon. If you would like to present a poster and be interested to participate in the poster slam, please indicate your request in the registration form.
Please note that all posters have to be in DIN A0 landscape format: 120 cm (width) x 84 cm (height)
In case you need to print your poster on site, please go HERE.
This year's user meeting will be accompanied by two Satellite Workshops.
The German-Israeli Minerva-Gentner Symposium "Bringing the Sea to Berlin" - the future of marine sciences building on high-resolution X-ray characterization methods at BESSY II@HZB. The symposium will take place June 19 to 21 at the HZB campus in Adlershof and is addressed to scientists working in this research field.
Probing functionality with soft x-rays: (a) Active sites and dynamics in molecules and materials and (b) Elemental excitations in solids. This workshop we will take place on June 21 in a hybrid format at the HZB campus in Adlershof. We will present the new instrumentation and opportunities at BESSY II to access and investigate material functionality and its dynamics.
An important part of our user meeting is the vendor exhibition, which is running alongside the meeting. We provide your organisation with the great opportunity to present your products to a large number of high impact customers. Each year we expect some 300 participants; surely a significant number for presenting your company, and a good chance to get in contact with new customers using synchrotron radiation and performing experiments at BESSY II. For more detailed information on how to join the vendor exhibtion please go to the vendor exhibition webpage.
The BESSY@HZB User Meeting will be held at the WISTA conference center and at BESSY II at Science Park Adlershof.
