Physics and Technology of Modern Particle Accelerators

The lecture Physik und Technik moderner Teilchenbeschleuniger provides an introduction to the fundamentals and theoretical description of the basic concepts of accelerator physics, as well as linear beam optics and beam dynamics and their extension into the area of non-linear effects.  Knowledge of different types of accelerators (linear accelerators, recirculators, circular accelerators) and relevant fields of technology (high-frequency systems and accelerator cavities, magnet systems, particle sources, beam diagnostics) is imparted. A visit to the BESSY II facility, MLS and proton therapy laboratory are part of the curriculum.

Structure, topics, and contents of the lecture:

  • linear and non-linear beam optics and beam dynamics,
  • linear and recirculating accelerator systems with normal conducting and superconducting magnets and high frequency systems,
  • circular accelerators,
  • colliders (e.g. LHC),
  • synchrotron radiation sources (e.g. BESSY II) and free electron lasers (e.g. European XFEL),
  • particle sources,
  • beam diagnostics,
  • current developments in accelerator physics such as energy recovery linear accelerators.

Prerequisites for participation:

  • Basic knowledge of
  • electrodynamics,
  • relativistics,
  • classical mechanics;

Knowledge of geometric optics is helpful, but not mandatory.

The university page of the lecture can be found here.
