D-Lecture with Metin Tolan: “Burning Ice” - synchrotron radiation reveals how molecules are captured in hydrates

Most of the carbon on earth is stored as methane-hydrate in deep sea areas (so-called "burning ice”). Prof. Metin Tolan, Technische Universität Dortmund, will show new data from synchrotron experiments, which unveil the process of hydrate formation for the first time, thus addressing a burning topic of energy and climate research.

He will discuss different microscopic nucleation models for hydrates and compare the data with computer simulations. The outstanding scientist is a renowned science teacher and has been awarded with the Communicator Prize in 2013 by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

The presentation will be given at the lecture hall of the Wilhem-Conrad-Röntgen-Campus of HZB at 2 pm. After the presentation, we invite you to “Glühwein” and informal discussion. We will provide a shuttle from Wannsee to Adlershof and return. If you like to use this shuttle for one-way, return or both, then please send an e-mail to jennifer.bierbaum@helmholtz-berlin.de.

The shuttle from Wannsee will leave at 1 pm and return at 4 pm (sharp).
