In February 2023, the Scientific Director of Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin was elected Corresponding Member of the Slovenian Academy of Engineering (IAS).
On 5 June, a festive event with all newly elected members took place in Ljubljana. A total of 31 Slovenian and international experts were officially recognised.
The international experts who received a corresponding membership come from the United States, the United Kingdom, Macedonia, Germany and Norway.
The ceremony to award the certificates to the newly elected members was also attended by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Robert Golob.
"Diversity and international cooperation are key to progress"
Bernd Rech now joins the 99 members of the Slovenian Academy of Engineering Sciences. IAS members are elected on the basis of their outstanding achievements in the fields of engineering sciences, technological development, the introduction of new technologies and products, and the effective development of industrial enterprises and other economic institutions.
At the ceremony, IAS President Dr Mark Pleško emphasised: "Diversity and international cooperation are key to progress and innovation in engineering, technology, development and business. With the new members, we strengthen our expertise, contribute to the international exchange of ideas and best practices and promote science and the engineering professions to the public. One of the most important goals of the IAS is to promote innovation and the development of the engineering profession in Slovenia and to strengthen the role and influence of engineers in society".
Apple of Inspiration
In December 2018, Bernd and HZB researchers had already received the Apple of Inspiration from the Slovenian President, Borut Pahor. With this award, he honours achievements in culture, science, sport and society. - Ernst Eckhard Koch Prize and Synchrotron Radiation Innovation AwardThis year, the Friends of Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (Freundeskreis des HZB e. V.) awarded the Ernst Eckhard Koch Prize to Dr. Dieter Skroblin of the Technische Universität Berlin for his outstanding doctoral thesis. The European Innovation Award Synchrotron Radiation went to Dr. Manfred Faubel from the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen and Dr. Bernd Winter from the Fritz Haber Institute in Berlin. The award ceremony took place at this year's HZB user meeting.
- Best Innovator Award 2023 for Artem MusiienkoDr. Artem Musiienko has been awarded a special prize for his groundbreaking new method for characterising semiconductors. At the recent annual conference of the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) in Milan, Italy, he received the MCAA Award for the best innovation. Since 2023, Musiienko has been carrying out his research project with a postdoctoral fellowship from the Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions in Antonio Abate's department, Novel Materials and Interfaces for Photovoltaic Solar Cells (SE-AMIP).
- Sebastian Keckert wins Young Scientist Award for Accelerator PhysicsDr Sebastian Keckert has been awarded the Young Scientist Award for Accelerator Physics of the German Physical Society (DPG). The prize is endowed with 5000 euros and was presented to him on 21.03. during the spring conference in Berlin. It honours the physicist's outstanding achievements in the development of new superconducting thin-film material systems for cavities.
