Public Lecture with Frédéric Safa and Marcos Bavdaž
18:15 o'clock
Join us for a public lecture with ESA experts Frédéric Safa and Marcos Bavdaž. They will take you behind the scenes of one of Europe’s most ambitious space missions. The European Space Agency’s NewAthena mission, planned for launch in the late 2030s, will be the most advanced X-ray observatory ever built. By observing the universe in the X-ray range, it will reveal how black holes grow, how galaxies evolve, and how matter behaves under extreme conditions.Building on the pioneering success of missions like XMM-Newton and Chandra, NewAthena also benefits from important research in the PTB laboratory at BESSY II in Berlin. There, scientists are assembling and testing the telescope's precision mirror modules with a total mirror surface of 300 m² to achieve a large collecting area.In this talk, both experts will share the scientific goals of the mission, the latest technical progress, and a behind-the-scenes look at how this ambitious project is being prepared for launch.
