Neutron diffractometer - E3

Strains, stresses & more

The dedicated residual stress neutron diffractometer E3 is located at the thermal beam port T2 of the medium flux research reactor BER II, at the HZB in Berlin. E3 carries out many investigations for inhouse-research, industry and external users yearly.

Elastically bent perfect Si crystals are used for monochromisation of the incident neutrons. They are particularly well-suited to strain measurements as they offer high neutron flux at the sample position as well as high resolution over a small range in scattering angle 2Θ, due to the possibility to adjust the horizontal curvature of the silicon crystals for optimized focusing conditions.
